6 Foreword Journal of Architectural / Planning Research and Studies, Volume 5, offering 3 issues annually, has set forth its publication pattern and capacity for following volumes. Issue 1 is mainly on Building and Information Technology, while issues 2 and 3 are focused on Urban Planning / Real Estate Development, and Architecture / Interior and Landscape Architecture respectively. Regarding the implementation process, the Journal of Architectural / Planning Research and Studies or JARS in its upcoming volumes will strictly follow the editorial processing criteria set forth by the Commission on Higher Education, Ministry of Education. Moreover, it is seeking more international outlook with more intellectual inputs from external contributors and more foreign language articles. In addition to book reviews and occasional review articles, each specific issue will be even more definitive in reviewing the content of articles as well as picking up the appropriate reviewers. It is the endeavor of the Faculty of Architecture and Planning to relentlessly improve the quality of Journal of Architectural / Planning Research and Studies. The goal is to fulfill its position with higher national and international recognition under the lists of journals maintained by various journal citation database services. Our academic endeavor would be to establish JARS as a vehicle to carry message for generating changes for sustaining a better life quality. As our world is facing critical environmental problems which are global concerns and require global solutions, the various disciplines related to built environment are striving for visionary researches leading toward environmental sustainability. The publications of such research outputs are the ultimate achievements of Journal of Architectural / Planning Research and Studies. The intellectual contributions are cordially invited and appreciated. Lastly, we would like to express our appreciation for the continuous financial support through grant for journal enhancement from the Commission on Higher Education. Journal of Architectural / Planning Research and Studies is obviously an academic mechanism that contributes to the spirit-driven stride toward being a leading research institution for Thammasat University. By and large, we are fully aware that a research journal reveals not only the state of the art of the related disciplines, but intrinsically also the academic quality of the institution that undertakes the publication of the journal. Professor Vimolsiddhi Horayangkura, Ph.D. Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, Thammasat University In search of academic excellence and enlightenment
7 Editorial Over the last decade, we have witnessed an extraordinary rise of new global movement that flattens the world with a refreshing new perspective of political, social, cultural, technological, and economic aspects. These massive changes have painted a complex but critical portrait of global movement in parallel to social and environmental problems including with the well-being of people. As these results encapsulate the transformation of environmental consciousness across the globe, debates on sustainability have emerged as a critical discourse in comprehensive disciplines. Journal of Architectural/Planning Research and Studies (JARS) has established itself as an explicit way that implicitly reveals the sustainable of built environment, in responsive to social and environmental awareness; this issue is mainly focused on the notion of sustainable concepts which correspond to architecture and urban planning. In Search of His Majesty the King s Underlying Concepts in Royally- Initiated Urban, Community and Architecture Development is published to be the first article among other selected papers as a demonstration of the successful approach to sufficiency development and sustainable long-term solutions. Following the discussion of sustainable development in Thailand, various articles that directly and indirectly foster the sustainable ideas are included. The first article, The Democracy Monument represents the built forms reflecting ideology, identity, and power manifestation which might contribute to the sustainable development in Thai politics. The integration of socio-cultural aspects and sustainable architecture are the main theme in Adaptive Re-use Old Architecture and Infill Design. The following article, Tectonics Culture plays an important role in introducing construction knowledge. As readers move toward the end of this journal, the discussion shifts to the urban design and planning. The topics of Urban Design Consideration, The Rudimentary Educational Survey for Urban Design and Landscape, and Design Guidelines for Sustainable Urban Park represent the idea of sustainable urban planning in various contexts. To solve the conflict of academic arena and professional awareness, this issue offers a review article that investigates this concern of an integrated discipline. Aimed to be the forum that bridges the gap between theory and practice, The Practice of Critical Theory in Architectural Schools: Twenty First Century Transformation reviews the frameworks of critical theory as an emerging arena in merging the boundaries between the practical and the theoretical point of views. Currently, contradictions between globalized world culture and traditional local culture create new paradigms for architectural design. To generate self-identity in architecture during this period of transition, practitioners need to integrate both local wisdoms and advanced technological disciplines. These ideas are exemplified in the paper of book review, Japan-ness in Architecture that represents Japanese architectural dimension along the period of post-modernity through the vision of the master architect, Arata Isozaki. As the globalization progresses, engagements with the sufficiency development and sustainable long-term solutions become drastically important. Our past and identity are the key assets for all of us to catch up with the new horizons. With respect to JARS s editorial team, the success of this issue of the journal is the outcome of many individuals and parties, with whom we would like to share appreciation. Kallaya Tantiyaswasdikul Editor-in-Chief
